Asa Philip Randolph (1889-1979) struggled to open the union movement to African-American workers. He had been working at a socialist newspaper when he was asked to organize for the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) in 1925. Although he had little union experience, Randolph became a well known leader for the BSCP, gaining recognition from the Pullman Palace Car Company as well as much of the public. He also led the BSCP to become the first Black union with an AFL charter. In addition to organizing for the BSCP, A. Philip Randolph started the March on Washington Movement which led to the creation of the Fair Employment Practices Commission. He is remembered as an outstanding leader in both the civil rights and labor movements.
