English coffee houses in the 17th and 18th century were viewed with suspicion by the crown as centers of unregulated discussion. Known as "Penny Universities," they were the nurseries of political and intellectual ferment. The scientific Royal Society, the commercial Lloyds of London and the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, Manufacture and Commerce are among the institutions spawned in coffee houses.
