Miriam Makeba. World renowned singer. Known as Mama Africa, Makeba spent thirty years in exile from her native South Africa for her opposition to the racist apartheid regime. She helped to popularize African song around the world. Paying tribute to her following her passing on Novemebr 9, 2008, Nelson Mandela called her "South Africa's first lady of song."
