Dream Act Art

Northland led a workshop to help a coalition of immigrant high school students plan a rally at out state capitol in early March. The goal was to build pressure for passage of the Dream Act, which would make it possible for immigrant young people to go to college. The kids came up with a design for signs that all had the words “My Dream” stencilled at the top and “My Life” on the bottom. In the middle each student drew what their dream was that college could help them achieve. They made some of the signs into graduation caps which they handed to legislators after meeting with them. Students ame from many high schools for the event and left very excited. Word has it that students who issed out want to be a part of the next action.
“You really opened up the students and got them thinking in new ways,” wrote one of the organizers. “Your workshop with them was popular education at its best and was very inspiring.” These young people are determined that immigration policy, which is meant to keep them washing dishes and cleaning floors, should not block them from reaching for more fulfilling lives. Pretty shocking, huh?
