June 2008 Newsletter

by Administrator

Dear Friend of Northland,

Here is our monthly chat and our June calendar page. This is coming to you a little late (the June calendar
is coming after June has begun!) because of an issue that would never have come up twenty years ago:
our access to the Internet was down for a week. After a week of companies pointing fingers at each
other we finally got back on line, no wiser but more than a week older for sure! Anyway we are pleased
to have the access that has become the oxygen of commerce in recent years.
We are gratified to see folks signing up on our email list and facebook page. It’s clear that this kind of
networking will be key to our growing, thriving and serving the movements of today and tomorrow. that’s
not to say that text messaging will replace old fashioned organizing. Internet networking is a form of
communication. Communication is an essential dimension of organizing and movement building but it only
one dimension. if you can use some of that networking power to let people know about Northland…
(no, we can’t just be your little secret!).
We’ll be plying our wares in a number of venues and ricardo will be presenting workshops on art and
organizing at The Great Labor Arts Exchange and the National Organizers Alliance, both in Washington DC
in late June. About that time we will be issuing a new handout catalog, mostly for conferences and activist
networking (instead of the old mass mailings). We’ll be happy to get help distributing them.
In the meantime the elections rage on, as do the wars and the global land grabs. We welcome
suggestions for new visual images, slogans and stories to illustrate. The next time you are in a difficult
political argument with a stubborn relative, think about what visual image or historical gem would have
helped in that moment. Then drop us a line and maybe we can make something happen. We’re not the
isolated-in-an -attic kinds of artists. We’re more about being and staying connected with folks who are
motivated to bring about social change for the better, whether it be over the kitchen table, at the ballot
box, at work or in the streets. wherever you take your vision, commitment and passion, we want you to
take us with you.
“Yours for a damned fine fight” (Mother Jones),
-The Northlanders
