October 2008 Newsletter
by AdministratorA lot has transpired since our last newsletter. For one thing our national leaders are digging deep into our pockets to come up with the money that was not available for either social security or health care. It is needed to compensate the Wall Street Pirates for money that they had hoped to extract from poor and working class home owners. I’m sure you’ve read enough rants on the topic so we won’t add our voice to the din. We will add our art, though.
Networking
We’d like to indulge in the pleasure of introducing you to the remarkable work of the Beehive Collective. This artist organization in the state of Maine has for years been engaged in innovative uses of art for popular education. Their large format, intricate posters and murals are developed in dialog with communities in Latin American countries (on “Free Trade,” “Plan Colombia” and other complex economic and political issues) in Appalachia (on mountain-top removal) and so forth. They bring their art, in which these issues are illuminated by a parade of furry bees, ants and other sundry creatures, back to their communities of origin and many others where they are the focal point for educational and organizing events.
It’s worth a detour over to their nicely organized web site-

- to see their great graphics and check out their strategies. Tell them hi from us.
The Coffee Calendar
Fall is calendar season. Northland’s Ricardo Levins Morales has released his 2009 Coffee Calendar. This is the second year for this pet creation of his (last year’s won a National Calendar Award for best graphic design). It is available from Northland for anyone who likes a dose of history, art and politics with their morning coffee. This time there are also some related cards, coasters and other goodies.
